What one hour costs

One number, fuel included.

No fuel receipt, no guessing the pump price. The same two instruction rates apply in every airplane. Everything else is on the fleet page, and how training works is on the learn to fly page.

Is the Van's RV-12iS a good airplane to learn to fly in?

For most people it is an excellent one. The RV-12iS is a two-seat light sport airplane from Van's Aircraft with a fuel-injected Rotax 912 iS engine, and N812EJ carries two Garmin G3X Touch displays and an autopilot, so you learn on the kind of screen-based instruments newer airplanes use rather than a row of round gauges. It is light and quick on the controls, which builds precise flying, and it burns little fuel: Van's handbook shows roughly 4 to 5 gallons an hour at typical cruise power. It rents for 165 dollars an hour wet, with fuel included, and my instruction is 75 dollars an hour. Because it is a light sport airplane it also fits the sport pilot certificate, which has a 20 hour FAA minimum. The trade-off is two seats and a 1,320 pound maximum weight, so it is not the airplane for carrying a family of four.
