What is the difference between the RV-12 and the RV-12iS?

The main difference is the engine. The original Van's RV-12, like N272VA from 2014, uses the carbureted Rotax 912 ULS, while the RV-12iS uses the fuel-injected Rotax 912 iS with electronic engine management, which starts more easily and is more efficient at cruise. The iS models also carry more baggage, 75 pounds against the original's 50. In the air they feel very similar: both are two-seat light sport airplanes with the same honest, responsive handling, and Van's handbook shows N272VA's type cruising at about 114 knots on 5.0 gallons an hour at typical power. N272VA has been upgraded with a Garmin G3X Touch display and a Garmin GMC 305 autopilot, so the glass-panel experience carries across. Every one of these airplanes rents for 165 dollars an hour wet, with fuel included, and my instruction is 75 dollars an hour.
